Ashley Bryan: Maine Master
– was born in Harlem, New York, in 1923. He attended Cooper
Union and the Skowhegan School and later chaired the art department
at Dartmouth College.
Now he travels all over the world captivating audiences of children
and adults with his powerful storytelling and poetry presentations.
When he is not traveling, he lives on Cranberry Island off the
coast of Maine where he paints, makes woodcuts and puppets from
objects he finds as he walks along the beach, creates stained
glass windows of beach glass, and writes and illustrates books.
In 2008, he was named a Literary Lion by the New York Public Library.
He won the 2009 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for “lasting
contribution to literature for children.”
